Doubt Can Bring Peace
John 20 is a powerful chapter in the Bible that tells the story of Thomas, doubt, trust, and peace. It is a story that speaks to the hearts of all believers, as it reminds us of the struggle we sometimes face in trusting God’s plan for our lives.
Doubt and Trust
The chapter begins with Mary Magdalene going to the tomb where Jesus was buried and finding it empty. She runs to tell Peter and John, who also come to see for themselves. They find the tomb empty, just as Mary had said. However, they did not understand the significance of this event until later.
Later that day, Jesus appeared to his disciples, but Thomas was not present. When the other disciples told Thomas that they had seen the Lord, he doubted them, saying, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
A week later, Jesus appeared to his disciples again, and this time Thomas was with them. Jesus invited Thomas to touch his wounds, and Thomas exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus replied, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Doubt and Peace
This story is a powerful reminder that doubt is a natural part of our faith journey. It is okay to question and seek answers, but we must not let doubt consume us. Jesus did not condemn Thomas for his doubt, but rather, he showed him the proof he needed to believe. Jesus also showed us that true peace can only come from faith and trust in him.
Thomas teaches us that it is important to have our own personal faith journey in order to fully believe. We must be willing to seek and allow God to reveal himself to us in a way that we can understand.
Our faith allows us to experience the peace that comes from knowing that we are loved and cared for by a God who is always with us.
