Jesus, Our Gift and Prince of Peace: Reflections on Isaiah 9:6
by Donna Myers
Isaiah 9:6, New Revised Standard Version
6 For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
This is one of my favorite Scriptures to read and think about in the Christmas season. The thought of Jesus being born “for us”, being “given to us”, illustrates to me, that His birth truly is a gift to us all. As we enter into the anticipation of Christmas – this Advent Season, anticipating the celebration of Christ’s birth, this passage warms my heart, as it describes who Jesus is and how this changes our lives. Authority rests upon His Shoulders so instead of carrying the weight and worry of the world on my own shoulders, I can place things in His capable and trustworthy hands, knowing He’s ultimately in control and is at work around us, in us and even through us. His wisdom, is available to us through His Word (the Bible) and His Spirit – at work among us and inside of us. His love for me, as a Father, is an everlasting one. It is not fickle, fading or incomplete. But rather, His Love for you and I, will endure forever. It’s a perfect love. A Perfect Father’s love. He came to bring Peace and in knowing Him, that Peace can reign in our hearts and influence those around us. Jesus truly is our Prince of Peace.
