Sanctuary Sounds
by Ann Colton
Beginning Friday, July 25 (time to be determined) we are creating a space for local musicians, storytellers and poets. The beginning phase will include performances once per month (or more if we are able) by local musicians who are known or who will become known by members of the congregation. The featured performers will be professional in that they perform on a relatively regular basis and have developed a following that will help fill the seats. Every third month, we will offer an open mic option for those who need a place to begin, to get their feet wet and have their voices and talents heard.
We will need help from the congregation to sustain this endeavor. It is our hope that this will not only be of value to our community but also add some financial help to the operating expenses of our own church body. We already have a few willing helpers, and it is our hope that this will not be a heavy lift, especially as we get a few performances under our belt. An ad hoc committee has been formed to supervise the start and ongoing operation of the coffeehouse. At this point it consists of Jill Boday, Jenni Hull, Jim Robshaw and Ann Colton. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Ann Colton at sanctuarysoundsSCC@gmail.com. Performances will take place in the sanctuary and intermission will be in Globe Hall or on the patio, weather permitting.
During Women’s History, Black History and Pride months, we will highlight performers who have stories to tell and music to share to increase all our understanding of their history and contributions. As for other
performances, it is our hope to include a diverse selection of musical genres and vocal arts.
Because we will benefit greatly from the featured performer’s own following and social media advertising, they will be paid, potentially, on a sliding basis dependent on the number of tickets sold. For example, it may be that if 100 or more tickets are sold, then the band, performer, etc., will receive 50% of the door proceeds. Tickets will be a minimum of $10, depending on who is performing. This creates true collaboration with the artists and, hopefully, increases the pool of those performers willing to join us. This is subject to further discussion.
SCC will also sell beverages and snacks during an intermission. We will be asking for volunteers to bake – hopefully on a revolving basis. Each month we will offer the typical fare (brownies, cookies, etc.) but we will also have a unique item paired with a delicious mocktail to add to the special feeling of an evening out. No food or beverages (other than water) will be allowed in the sanctuary. All proceeds from the food and drink sales will go to SCC. Performers may be allowed to sell their merchandise at intermission – shirts, music, etc.
