Slatersville Congregational Church History
Slatersville Congregational Church

Soon after John Slater started this mill village in 1806, he saw the need of a Sunday School to give the youngsters schooling as well as moral instruction. In October 1807, he petitioned the Legislature for permission to raise money by lottery to build a meeting house for school and religious purposes.

Our Sunday School, built in 1808 , was one of the earliest established in this country. For the next few years, until 1816, the meetinghouse was non-denominational, served by itinerant ministers of various faiths who visited the village to Baptize, marry, bury their dead and lead Sunday services. Congregational missionaries became the most prominent group, and with fifteen persons, formed the Slatersville Congregational Church on September 8, 1818.

The current building, with its tall spire, facing a beautiful common lined with trees and surrounded by 19th century houses tucked neatly behind a white picket fence, was erected in 1838 by the Slater Company to seat 450. The balconies were added in 1859 and the church was lengthened by 22 feet to accommodate 750 worshippers, nearly the entire village! Since those early days membership in the church has fluctuated. The Harvey M. Eastman Memorial Center was added in 1959 and in 1966 extensive renovations to the sanctuary were completed.

A beneficial change to our church occurred 1974 with the merger of the Globe Congregational Church of Woonsocket, RI. Not only was the church strengthened in its membership but also in its outreach to a wider community.   In 1988 the spacious Globe Hall was built providing a new kitchen, administrative offices, and a function room which is not only used for church gatherings but by community groups as well.
